Do I Need an API Key?

It depends on the connection you use. A coding-agent runtime can use its own account sign-in, while direct hosted API requests usually require an API credential. A local model server can provide another route. Use Providers & Models to choose the connection before obtaining a key.

Does my coding subscription include API access?

Do not assume so. Signing into a coding runtime does not automatically configure the same company's direct API. API usage, coding-plan allowances, and local inference have separate requirements. See AI service costs for the billing distinction.

Oracle and Context Builder can use different connections from your execution session. A working coding-agent login therefore does not prove that every model feature is configured.

Where do I add or remove a key?

Use the corresponding provider's settings. API Providers documents direct-provider controls; OpenRouter and Custom API have their own pages. Runtime-specific credentials and login controls belong under CLI Providers.

You can configure several provider connections. This does not mean every provider supports multiple saved keys or automatic key rotation. Follow its actual controls. Deleting a saved key removes that local credential; revoke it with the issuing service if you intend to invalidate the key itself.

Where are credentials stored and used?

Official builds use local macOS Keychain-backed secure storage for credentials managed by the app. Coding runtimes can maintain separate login state. Ad-hoc debug builds use temporary secure storage; see source-build behavior.

Credentials are used by the configured connection, including validation and model requests. Some integrations also pass a saved key to a child coding runtime; a custom endpoint receives requests routed to that endpoint. Local storage does not mean the credential never leaves the app process. The provider reference explains shared credentials and account boundaries.

If a credential appears missing after an upgrade, use Credential Recovery before replacing it. Storage repair and successful authentication with the service are separate checks.
