Why Is My MCP Connection Not Working?

Start by identifying the symptom. Installing an MCP connection, authenticating a coding runtime, and configuring an Oracle model are separate operations. A failure in one does not necessarily mean the others are broken.

The client cannot find the executable

Copy configuration from the running CE app using Quick Setup or Settings → MCP Server. Confirm that the generated command path exists and belongs to the intended release or debug build. Do not reuse a Classic executable path. If the CLI Tools row reports Needs update, use Update, then reconnect the client.

Follow the Setup Guide for installation and a connection check. Installing workflow instructions alone does not install the MCP server connection.

The executable starts, but the client cannot connect

Keep RepoPrompt open and enable MCP access for the intended window. Active indicates that the listener and that window's access are ready; Waiting for listener… does not. Bring the app forward to inspect any pending connection request, then check Status Dashboard and its errors.

The app-backed bridge uses local UNIX sockets. Changing a firewall, VPN, or TCP port is not the first troubleshooting step for this path. See Transport Modes and Connection Management.

The client connects, but tools are missing

Check window access and MCP Tools settings. Disabled tools and connection policy affect the advertised list; some tools are available only in eligible session contexts. Reconnect a client that cached an earlier tool list. A connection approval is not a blanket grant for all tools or workspace mutations.

Tools use the wrong project or conversation

Use bind_context with op="list" to discover contexts and op="status" to inspect the binding. Bind the intended workspace roots or a returned context ID. Switching the visible tab does not reliably replace an explicit connection binding. See Context Binding.

Multiple clients and windows are supported. Diagnose their bindings rather than disconnecting every other client as a general rule.

Oracle or Context Builder fails after connection

Check the selected model connection, authentication, and provider response. Agent Models configures Oracle and discovery choices; they need not use the same connection. Use the current Tools Reference, rather than Classic examples for obsolete planning tools.

If the failure persists, record the exact error, app version, client, and a minimal reproduction. Follow Issue Reporting; remove credentials and private repository content from shared diagnostics.
