OpenAI API

OpenAI API connects supported RepoPrompt model features directly to an API account. It is separate from the Codex CLI runtime and RepoPrompt-managed ChatGPT sign-in.

Connect

Validate a credential in API Providers → OpenAI to fetch available models. The settings page documents API service tiers, tier-specific model variants, and the optional custom base URL.

For an independently configured OpenAI-compatible service, use Custom API. For an Azure resource deployment, use Azure OpenAI. Compatibility with the OpenAI protocol does not establish the same account, model IDs, or service terms.

Models and capabilities

The OpenAI API model catalog is the provider reference for model identifiers and capabilities. Actual selection depends on the API account, endpoint, and integration support. A model available through a CLI or subscription product is not necessarily available through this API connection.

Models explains effort and service tiers. Use Model Config for supported streaming, API-routing, and temperature overrides; these do not grant access to unavailable models.

Execution modes and streaming

Some built-in OpenAI API selections represent an execution mode rather than a separate API model ID. RepoPrompt sends the underlying model identifier together with a mode such as reasoning.mode="pro". The selected mode, reasoning effort, and service tier are separate choices; changing one does not select the others.

For these mode-bearing selections, Use Streaming is off and disabled in Model Config, even if a streaming override was previously saved. The background Responses path polls for completion and returns output when it finishes rather than streaming partial text. A foreground completion path also preserves the mode in its request. Waiting without partial output is therefore not, by itself, proof that the request has stopped.

Oracle and MCP results retain the selected mode’s readable identity when the service executes through the shared base model ID. If the runtime reports a genuinely different model, that reported identity remains authoritative.

These built-in mode selections belong to the direct OpenAI API integration. RepoPrompt does not automatically create matching Azure variants or grant equivalent support to a custom compatible endpoint. An available app selection does not establish that your account or endpoint accepts the request; inspect any provider error and choose a supported option.

Account and billing

The API project and credential determine request charges and quotas. A ChatGPT subscription or Codex login does not automatically fund API calls. Inspect the relevant API account and service tier when assessing usage.
