Pro Mode

Pro Edit is RepoPrompt's advanced editing system that breaks down complex changes into smaller, focused tasks - each handled by the most appropriate AI model. It works in both Chat mode (automatic) and Compose mode (for external AI responses).

How Pro Edit Works​

In Chat Mode (Automatic)​

When you enable Pro Edit in Chat mode:

  • The planning model analyzes your request and breaks it into per-file changes
  • Each file edit runs through a delegate agent - a sandboxed helper with constrained tools
  • Multiple files can be edited in parallel for faster results
  • You see clean diffs - the XML format is handled invisibly

In Compose Mode (External AI)​

Pro Edit also works with powerful external models like GPT-5.5 Pro on ChatGPT Pro (web):

  • Copy your context to an external AI with Pro Edit format enabled
  • The model reasons deeply and responds with structured XML changes
  • Paste the response back into RepoPrompt
  • Pro Edit applies each change through delegate agents

Delegate Agents​

Delegate agents are sandboxed helpers that make Pro Edit safer and more reliable:

  • Single-file focus: Each agent only edits one allowed file
  • Constrained tools: Agents can only read, search, and apply edits - nothing destructive
  • Clear reporting: Each agent reports exactly what changed (or if nothing changed)
  • Parallel execution: Multiple agents can run simultaneously for faster results

Multi-Model Routing​

Pro Edit automatically selects the best model for each edit based on complexity:

  • Simple edits: Fast, cost-effective models (e.g., Gemini Flash 2.0)
  • Complex edits: Powerful models (e.g., Claude Sonnet, DeepSeek V3)
  • Large files: Models optimized for high token counts

This happens automatically - you don't need to configure it. The app evaluates file size and change complexity to make the best choice.

Enabling Pro Edit​

In Chat Mode​

  1. Select files and compose your instructions
  2. Click "New AI Chat"
  3. Enable the "Pro" toggle in the chat panel
  4. Send your message - Pro Edit handles the rest

In Compose Mode​

  1. Select your copy preset that includes Pro Edit format
  2. Copy and paste into your external AI (ChatGPT, Claude.ai, etc.)
  3. Copy the AI's XML response
  4. Use Apply in RepoPrompt to trigger Pro Edit

Configuration (Optional)​

While automatic routing works well for most cases, you can customize:

  1. Click the gear icon next to the model dropdown

  2. Assign specific models for different edit types:

    • Simple Edits Model: For small, straightforward changes
    • Complex Edits Model: For intricate multi-step changes
    • Large File Model: For files exceeding the size threshold

  3. Adjust the "Large File Threshold" as needed

Why Use Pro Edit?​

  • Safer edits: Sandboxed agents with constrained tools reduce mistakes
  • Cost effective: Simple edits use cheaper models automatically
  • Faster results: Parallel execution across multiple files
  • External AI support: Use powerful reasoning models on their native platforms
  • Less setup: Automatic model selection and path resolution

Best Practices​

  • For diff editing: Use Claude Sonnet 4.5 or DeepSeek V3 - they produce precise diffs that merge cleanly
  • For external AI (ChatGPT Pro web): GPT-5.5 Pro and Grok 4.1 work excellently with Pro Edit format for deep reasoning tasks
  • For in-app Codex CLI agent/review: GPT-5.5 Medium/High are the recommended Codex CLI models for implementation and review — they are not available via the OpenAI API or OpenRouter
  • For speed: Gemini Flash 2.0 excels at whole-file rewrites for smaller files
