Do I need to pay for AI services?

RepoPrompt is free and open source. AI usage depends on the connection you choose: a coding-agent account, an API credential, or a model server you operate.

What RepoPrompt charges

RepoPrompt does not charge for the application or add a markup to provider bills. You supply the relevant account or service. Its terms, quotas, pricing, and data practices apply to requests sent through that route.

A CLI subscription does not automatically pay for direct API requests, and an API key does not establish access to a separate subscription product. Check which account and connection the task actually uses.

For the transition from the former application subscription, see What Happened to the Paid Version?. For credentials, see Do I Need an API Key?.

Supported AI providers

The Providers & Models directory maintains the supported coding-agent, API, compatible-backend, and local-service references. Each provider page explains prerequisites, authentication, capabilities, account boundaries, and billing distinctions.

Provider setup and current model catalogs

Use the provider's reference page for its connection instructions and official catalog links. Models explains discovery, availability, aliases, effort, and how selections differ between execution, Oracle, and Context Builder. Model names and prices change, so this FAQ does not maintain a second catalog.

How to keep costs predictable

  • Inspect the provider account that owns the login or API key and review its current pricing, quotas, and billing controls.
  • Keep context focused and choose a capability level suited to the task. A workflow can make several model requests, including discovery, consultation, or draft rewriting.
  • Review paid speed tiers and automatic follow-up features before using them for extended tasks.
  • For local models, confirm that inference actually stays local and account for hardware and electricity use. A local server can also be configured to call a hosted route with separate charges.

What is free and what is not

The application is free. AI access is free only when the selected service, account, model, and usage are free under its current terms, or when inference runs locally without a hosted API bill. RepoPrompt cannot guarantee a provider's free allowance or subscription entitlement.
